Autumn is the visit that matters, and it has a deadline. Clear your gutters after the leaves are down and before the first hard freeze. NOAA data for Boise puts the first 32-degree frost at a 10% chance by 5 October and a 50% chance by 21 October, which makes late October into early November the practical window. Add a spring check, and a third clear in June if you are on the Boise River cottonwood corridor.

Wet debris in a gutter that freezes does not stay debris. It becomes a solid block of ice sitting on your fascia, and ice is heavy. It thaws in the afternoon sun, refreezes overnight, and expands each time. That cycle is what pulls hangers out of fascia boards and separates gutters from the house. It is also how ice dams form: meltwater running down a roof hits a blocked, frozen trough, backs up, and finds its way under the shingles rather than over the edge.
The spring visit exists to catch what blew in over winter and to confirm nothing came loose in the freeze and thaw. It is quicker and cheaper than the autumn clean. Skipping it is a defensible choice on a newer home with young trees. Skipping autumn is not.
Homes along the Boise River and on Eagle Island have a third season. Mature cottonwoods release seed fluff in late May and June, and wet cottonwood fluff mats into a dense felt that seals a trough and plugs downspouts far more completely than leaves do. If you are on the corridor, clear it once cottonwood season finishes in late June, or everything that falls in autumn lands on top of a blockage that is already there.
Watch the first real rain of autumn. Water sheeting over the front lip of the gutter instead of running cleanly out the downspout means it is blocked. Other reliable signs: plants growing out of the trough, dark staining running down the fascia, a visible sag anywhere along the run, or birds working the gutter line.
Hand-clearing rather than blowing, because a blower scatters wet debris over the roof, the lawn and the windows and still will not clear a packed downspout. Every downspout flushed and tested until water runs clear. Debris bagged and taken away. And a look at hangers, seams and fascia while someone is up there, with photos of anything that needs a roofer.
